The picture below, taken by an unknown photographer, shows a train full of braceros saying goodbye to their wives and children before they leave for America for the summer. This image depicts the reason that many braceros signed up for the program in the first place – to make money and support their families. However, the thing most of note about this picture is the hatless young man leaning out of the window. Although it is impossible to know his exact age, it is obvious that he is fairly young, most likely in his early teens or below. The youth of this bracero is important to note because it represents just how desperate people were to make a living; families sending young boys like this one was not uncommon.
